Glossary Term

Constituency

A geographical area represented by a single Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons.

Explanation

The UK is divided into 650 constituencies. Each constituency elects one MP in a general election using the first-past-the-post system—the candidate with the most votes wins. Constituency boundaries are reviewed regularly to ensure roughly equal population sizes.

Example

The constituency of Islington North has been represented by Jeremy Corbyn since 1983.
