General Election

A nationwide election in which voters choose Members of Parliament (MPs) for all 650 constituencies in the UK.

Explanation

General elections determine which party forms the government. The party that wins the most seats usually forms the government, and its leader becomes Prime Minister. Elections must be held at least every five years.

Example

The most recent general election was held in July 2024, resulting in a change of government.
