Royal Assent

The formal approval given by the monarch to a bill passed by Parliament, making it an Act of Parliament (a law).

Explanation

Royal Assent is the final stage in the legislative process. By convention, the monarch always grants Royal Assent—it has not been refused since 1708. This is an example of how the monarch's role is ceremonial, not political.

Example

Once a bill has passed through the House of Commons and House of Lords, it is presented to the King for Royal Assent.
